GOG and DRM-Free FAQ - General

Q: What is the GOG version of the game?

A: It’s a DRM-Free version of War for the Overworld, which launched on GOG.com on June 14th, 2017. It replaces the old standalone DRM-Free build.

Q: What’s the difference between the GOG version and the old DRM-Free version?

A: The GOG version supports the same DLC and expansions as the Steam version. It also supports tracked achievements, cloud saving, and online multiplayer when connected through GOG Galaxy. The old DRM-Free version was missing a lot of this content. The GOG version will continue to be updated with new content and patches, just like the Steam version!

Q: What’s the difference between the GOG version and the Steam version?

A: Very little. On Steam you can buy the Worker skin DLCs individually or as a collection, whereas on GOG.com we’re only offering the collection. The Steam version also has support for community maps and translations via the Steam Workshop - whereas with the GOG version we’ve created a repository on our forums where you can manually download and share custom content. Find out more about sharing content for the GOG version in our knowledgebase articles for community maps and translations.

Q: What happened to the old DRM-Free version?

A: It was retired on June 14th, 2017 - it has been completely replaced by the GOG version.

Q: Does the GOG version work without connecting through GOG Galaxy?

A: Yes. You can download it using the standard DRM-Free installers from GOG.com, or play it in GOG Galaxy without connecting. Note that without connecting through GOG Galaxy there is no tracked achievements system, cloud saving, or online multiplayer. However, local achievements, LAN, and direct connect multiplayer will still work.

Q: What are the benefits of connecting through GOG Galaxy?

A: Doing this enables enhanced features such as tracked achievements, cloud saving, and online multiplayer.

Q: Can I use GOG cloud saving?

A: Yes, cloud saving through GOG Galaxy is available.

Q: Does the GOG version run on Mac OS X?

A: Yes, both the downloadable GOG.com version and the GOG Galaxy version support OS X.

Q: Does the GOG version run on Linux?

A: Standalone Linux builds of the base game and all DLCs are available from GOG.com. But GOG Galaxy doesn’t support Linux, and thus only LAN and direct connect multiplayer are available.

Q: When will updates be released for the GOG version?

A: The same day as they are released on Steam. However, manually downloaded builds from GOG.com can take 24-48 hours to become available.

Q: What languages does the GOG version support?

A: English, French, and German for the base game and all DLC and expansions. We’re also looking to support Russian in the near future. The Italian, Spanish, and Polish translations of the base game are included, but they are not officially supported. Community translations are supported - see this knowledgebase article for more information.

Q: Do my Steam Achievements carry over to GOG Galaxy?

A: We’re afraid not.

Q: Does my Steam campaign progress carry over to GOG Galaxy?

A: No.

Q: Does multiplayer mode support Crossplay between GOG Galaxy and Steam?

A: Yes!

Q: Are the Crucible mode leaderboards shared across Steam and GOG Galaxy?

A: No. Each version has its own leaderboards.

Q: Is The Cynical Imp charity DLC available on GOG.com?

A: Yes! GOG keys for The Cynical Imp and previously-exclusive Kickstarter Dungeon Themes are available if you donate through our charity website.

Q: I use Steam - what does this mean for me?

A: If you’re happy playing the game through Steam there’s nothing to do. GOG.com is simply another option, and is primarily for players who prefer DRM-Free gaming. Both services have strong communities, which we’re happy to support.

Q: Why do you have a DRM-Free version?

A: Some players aren’t cool with the DRM (Digital Rights Management) of services like Steam, so we feel it’s our duty to offer an alternative with no DRM. We also promised a DRM-Free version during our Kickstarter campaign. We had a DRM-Free build available through Humble before the GOG release, but it always trailed behind the Steam version in terms of features and patches (due to the technical difficulties involved in maintaining it). Now we’re on GOG.com there is greater parity between Steam and the DRM-Free version.

GOG and DRM-Free FAQ - Claiming a Key

Q: I previously bought the game through Humble before it was available on GOG - can I still get a GOG key?

A: Most certainly! Email us at support@brightrockgames.com to request a GOG key (please enclose your purchase email address and Humble order number). Humble orders can easily be found from the Humble Resender

Q: What if I bought the game on Humble after it was made available on GOG?

Unfortunately We can only provide GOG keys to humble purchases that were made before the 14th of June 2017. We do not provide keys to any purchases made after that date. However if you purchase via Humble you will be given a choice of which key you want to redeem.

Q: I’m a Kickstarter backer - can I still get a GOG key?

A: Absolutely! Email us at support@brightrockgames.com to request a GOG key (please enclose your backer email address). As a Kickstarter backer you’ll get the same DLC rewards in the GOG version as you would on Steam.

Q: I already own the game on Steam - can I use GOG Connect to import it?

A: Yes, but only for a limited time and only for the base game (not DLC). War for the Overworld is available on GOG Connect for a week following release, until June 21st, 2017. If you miss this deadline, then as long as you are a Humble buyer (Pre 14-07-2017) or Kickstarter backer, you can email us at support@brightrockgames.com to request a GOG key (please enclose your purchase email address and Humble order number, or Kickstarter backer email address).

Q: I bought DLC on Steam - can I import this to GOG.com?
