Consistent Launch Crash

Hello Support Team,

I am experiencing a consistent crash upon launching the game: The game's logo displays and then the error occurs.

As per a suggestion I read elsewhere on the bugtracker, I have attempted running the game without having my USB-attached sound device connected. It has made no difference.

Specs:

  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
  • Memory: 4096MB RAM
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 CPU, M 430 @ 2.27GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
  • GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

I'm sadly unable to provide my game's exact build as its stated in the game's main menu and the crash occurs before that, but I can at least say that its whatever Steam has available for download as per 25 December 2015. :)

Please find the log included here: error.log

Thanks for any assistance or commentary you can provide.

Steam Public

Greetings.

I am sorry to hear about your issue.

You would help us to find the cause more quickly if you share your output log.

It can be found here

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\War For The Overworld\WFTOGame_Data\output_log.txt

I am looking forward to find a solution as soon as possible.

Regards,

Marados

Thank you very much for your response!

Sadly, I cannot upload the requested file. It does not exist at the location provided or anywhere else on my system.

Kind regards

Hi Icey,

usually the game creates this log each time it starts. Even if it crashes during this we are often able to find indicators here.

I guess this bug could be deeper than I though so I am going to ask the coders for help. Anyway, this will take a few days.

Until then, I do have one last idea.

Please set the steam launch options (right-click the game in your steam library -> properties) of the game to

-force-opengl

and restart it.

This forces the game to run with OpenGl instead of DirectX. As both systems set apart in quite a few things there is a chance to solve your issue.

However, if this does not help, remove the launch options again, please.

Hello Marados,

As per your suggestion I altered Steam's launch options to "-force-opengl" but this did not resolve the issue. The new launch options' error log created by the crash states that KERNELBASE.dll caused an Access Violation at "0033:fdc9bccd" instead of "0033:fdcabccd" and several other such differences. The significance of these are lost on me, but I've included the subtly different error log in case it helps: error.log.

The output log sadly remains absent from the directory, but the game does create and modify a launcher log which I will include: War for the Overworld Launcher Log.txt.

Thank you for your continued support and time.

Kind regards,

Hello Icey,
If no output_log.txt is created, this means the game does not even run at all.
So somehow Unity is crashing right before any of our own code.
So this is either a serious issue of the Unity engine or it might be a driver issue or antivirus software.
Do you use AVG Antivirus by any chance? AVG is known to see the WFTO executable as false positive and prevents it from starting. For some users this causes an Access Violation.
Do you have any other games based on Unity engine that work?

Cheers

Hello V0id,

Thank you for your response.

Based off of this list, other games using the Unity engine that I've ran on my machine are the following:

  • Anna
  • Endless Space
  • Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft

Out of these 3 games, only Endless Space saw serious playing but all of them ran without ever crashing.

I do not use AVG Antivirus.

My video drivers are up to date, but I'm presently uncertain about my sound drivers. I will look into that.

Kind regards,

According to the Launcher log the GPU can neither be identified as Intel, Nvidia nor AMD device.
I am still guessing it's an issue with the GPU (driver).
So the rig is a notebook? Does it have a switchable graphics solution (onboard Intel + dedicated AMD GPU)?
Can you try to force it to use your dedicated GPU?
See: https://forum.subterraneangames.com/threads/solution-for-ui-does-not-show-or-game-is-very-slow.8665/

Does it help?

Yes, the rig is a notebook (Acer Aspire 7745G) with a dedicated AMD GPU. However, opening up the Catalyst Control Center and selecting Power only shows the PowerPlay sub-menu in which I cannot make any adjustments.

Hrm, this usually means that you use a vendor (Acer) specific driver which has this option disabled.
Normally it selects the correct device automatically, however WftO is not in their list and it does often assign the onboard intel graphics to the game which can cause problems.
For some (rare) models it can be required to use the vendor driver but often it's not and the vendor drivers available are often outdated.
(I had my self an Acer Aspire and decided at some point to use the official generic AMD driver after Acer stopped updating it)
You could try to use the generic AMD driver instead, which might potentially instantly fix the issue but at least should give you the required option to force the dedicated GPU for WftO.

However before you try this, can you check if you can get the game started with this parameter:
-force-d3d9
It might help to make the game start, if it's running on the weak onboard intel GPU.
If the game starts with this option, do you get now an output_log.txt? Can you upload it so we can see which GPU was assigned?

Cheers

I ran the game using "-force-d3d9", which sadly resulted in the same crash and no output log being created.

I believe I am already using the generic AMD drivers, I have had to manually download them through AMD for some time. I could be mistaken in this regard.
