Performance Problems

I've been experiencing the whole package: lag, stutter and inconsistent framerates. The game rarely reaches 60 FPS, often it crawls around 20, sometimes even lower. The game freezes for 1-5 seconds on a regular basis. The longer I play the worse it gets, to a point where the game messed up my PC so hard that I basically have to restart the system or wait like 15 minutes for it to calm down. The game also regularly freezes when loading, always approx within the the first 10% of loading. I don't know if that is relevant or related to the problem. It's horribly frustrating because I really do enjoy this game, but as it is now it's borderline unplayable. I'm pretty sure that it's not my specs. I should be able to run this game just fine with them.

OS: Windows 7 Professional (64 Bit)
CPU: AMD FX-6300 Six-Core (3,5 GHz)
GPU: NVidia GeForce GTX 950 (2GB RAM)
RAM: 8 GB

I have asked around on the Steam forums and got the advice to force my GPU as the preferred GPU via the NVidia control panel. After I did that the performance became notably better, but it is still not very good. Is there anything else that can be done?

Hey brotmeister,

Could I get you to send me your output_log.txt? This guide should show you where it is: How to: Submit a Bug Ticket

If you could also send the contents of any crash folders that would be great.

Sure, here you go. Is there any difference between the output_log from the crash folder and the regular one?

The crash folder log will contain a few lines that show why it crashed, the other one is from your last play session.

So looking at the logs I can see that I must first apologise for the crash you have experienced. It looks like it occurred during Unity's internal memory cleanup, which is unfortunately a total black box for us.

The other log seems to point at a broken save file as there are many constant errors that would decrease performance being logged. Could you send me that save file, this guide will show you how: How to: Locate your save files

Could I also get a bit more info about the exact issue?

  1. Do these issues occur immediately after starting a new game on an official map?
  2. What is the framerate at the beginning of the session compared to at the end?
  3. How quickly does it decrease?

Hey, I wasn't sure how many you would need, so I just sent several saves. The problems don't seem to be linked to a specific save file though, since I experience them on every save, across all campaigns (Base, Heart of Gold, My Pet Dungeon)

1. Yes, I have exclusively played on official maps and the issues have been there consistently.

2. While the performance varies it is often better when starting a game and then becomes progressively worse. I don't think I have ever hit 60 FPS, but at the beginning it often is around 40 and later - when there's more going on - drops to around 20.

3. I cannot really tell. Sometimes I play for an hour without the framerate dropping much and sometimes it already gets really bad after an hour.

One more thing I just remembered that may be related to the issues in some way. When I hit escape to pause, depending on how long I wait until I hit escape again, the game needs several seconds to pick up, as if it had been doing some heavy calculating while it was paused.

We are currently working on sweeping performance improvements for the next patch, we'll use these maps to see if the performance is any better and let you know how we progress.

Found this thread and wanted to add to it since the last update came out. I have been playing this game off and on since the beginning. Periodically checking in to test if the performance issues have been fixed yet...alas they have not :(

Over the years many patches have promised to fix the terrible performance but to this day this game has not run smoothly for me on any level since it was in Alpha and has never improved...never! :P

I would attribute it to my lack of stellar PC stats but from what I read that doesn't seem to matter as folks with "great" systems have the same issues that are described in the first part of the thread thread.

The frames run normally at about 20 fps but once in a while it will run perfectly for like 2 minutes then back to shit for the next half hour.

Here's all the relevant info:

OS: Windows 10 Home (64 bit)
CPU: Intel Core i7-3610QM 8 Core @ 2.3GHz
GPU: NVidia GeForce GTX 660M (2GB RAM)
RAM: 12 GB

Would have included the output_log.txt from the crash folder but it simply will not upload it for some reason...not sure how useful it is though since the game never really crashes these days and the file is from 2016. Just crap performance...

Is this on a specific map/save? Could you upload it?

You are just under the min spec of the game so I'm not surprised that the game is a bit rough, but it should be much better on a conservative video setting and normal map.

It dosen't seem to matter what map I use but obviously the larger ones and lava ones seem to be particularly bad...I have the settings turned to minimum.
So all in all you think it's time for a system upgrade?
