Escape key shows desktop
noticed last night (1.6.16) steam updated to recent build of 1.4 update. Think it's something like 1.4r4
Anyway playing games and pressed Esc key to pause and show menu however game instantly shows desktop with game continuing to play minimised.

i can not replicate this issue.
However the games version is 1.4.0f9
can you please make sure you are on the latest patch?
for that you can verify the integrity of the games files under properties -> local files
also please check if you somehow got locked into a beta (internal) build underthe beta tab
