Black Screen macOS eGPU

Starting the game I get a black screen. While the screen stays black the game is loading as expected and once it has completed loading I do hear the sounds you expect to hear but the screen stays black. Interestingly the this only happens if I use my eGPU. Using the internal UHD Graphics works but is unbearably slow. This used to work but I cannot tell which version of macOS or War for the Overworld broke it. Looking into the issue I found many postings for Windows and Linux, however, there does not seem to be any hint on what to do on macOS. Any pointers are appreciated.
