Consistent Launch Crash

Hello Support Team,

I am experiencing a consistent crash upon launching the game: The game's logo displays and then the error occurs.

As per a suggestion I read elsewhere on the bugtracker, I have attempted running the game without having my USB-attached sound device connected. It has made no difference.

Specs:

  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
  • Memory: 4096MB RAM
  • CPU: Intel Core i5 CPU, M 430 @ 2.27GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
  • GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650

I'm sadly unable to provide my game's exact build as its stated in the game's main menu and the crash occurs before that, but I can at least say that its whatever Steam has available for download as per 25 December 2015. :)

Please find the log included here: error.log

Thanks for any assistance or commentary you can provide.

Steam Public

  • Not Fixable

Hey Mike,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I've just had a closer look at your GPU and it looks like it falls far below minimum spec. As you can see here https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+920M&id=3192 your GPU scores on average 726 points on the PassMark benchmark.

Unfortunately War For the Overworld requires a minimum score of 1500 on the PassMark benchmark to run the game, as stated in our System Requirements. There's nothing we can really do to fix it other than recommending that you attempt to run on your alternative machine.

What are the specs of the Laptop that is able to run the game?

I wouldn't be so hasty with declining this issue if I were you, because I'm afraid you are incorrect....

As I stated above, My Desktop PC has a GeForce GTX 1070, which scores 11,091 points on the PassMark benchmark.  It is a fairly new card and can run much more demanding games than WFTO.

The GeForce 920m is the card in my Laptop, which not only runs WFTO just fine, but can even handle it in Ultra Graphics.

In that case you have sent me the log from the laptop. You can see the 920m listed on line 5 of the listed log. Can I get the log from the machine that isn't working from a session where it fails the launch?

Ah-haaaah!  I see what's going on here!  Sorry about that...  In an attempt to troubleshoot/fix WFTO on my desktop PC I copied my working Laptop's installation to my desktop PC.  That's how the output_log will have gotten in there.

Unfortunately this means that WFTO cannot get far enough to even generate an output_log on my desktop.

In that case could you please uninstall and reinstall the game. While doing so could you ensure that all AV software is disabled so that we can rule its interference out?

You could also try and run the Windows system file checker referenced by then last user that had this issue.

This can be achieved by running '/sfc scannow' in an admin CMD window.

Thanks!  I got it working!

Turns out it was Avast Antivirus.  Once I uninstalled Avast it started working. Even after I reinstalled Avast it continued working.  I have Avast on my Laptop too, but that didn't cause a problem.  I put it down to the OS maybe.  My Laptop has W10, but my Desktop has W7.  So a combination of W7, Avast and WFTO can cause it to fail at first.  Very strange.
