Frame rate capped/stuttery in main menu and veins of evil selection grid on AMD cards.

Hi all.

I'm experiencing a weird bug where my frame rate seems to be capped at 24fps in the main menu and whilst using the veins of evil grid. When playing the game itself my framerate is fine. I have tried swapping my AMD 5700XT for an nVidia 2070 and the problem goes away so i'm assuming it's something the AMD drivers are doing. It does not make the game unplayable, but the mouse pointer lags significantly meaning that it's difficult to navigate the main menu.

My specs are:

Ryzen 2700X at stock

Asus Crosshair VIII Impact

32GB DDR4 @ 3200MHz

Powercolor/AMD 5700XT Red Dragon at stock

1TB Intel 600p SSD

Windows 10 x64 (however it does the same thing in Linux Kubuntu 20.04)

I also run the game with an Acer XF270HU monitor with Freesync enabled at 40-144Hz. Vsync is turned off, turning it on makes no difference, nor does disabling Freesync. I'm running the latest AMD drivers but this has been happening for a while now, going back at least half a dozen recent driver packages.

Thanks

This sounds similar to the issue I just reported for 2.0.8. I am also seeing 24 FPS on the Main menu > Single Player menu. It drops to 16 FPS if I mouse over stuff.

I'm going to add this additional output log as this one is a bit different. Basically I was doing a scanario, mining out gold and building my base up, and the frame rate was all over the place a bit. Then it starts to plummet, down from over 100fps to 80, 60, 40, 20 and then down into single figures. Basically unplayable.

Then it black screens completely and locks up the computer, requiring a hard reboot.

This is a log from playing the game for about an hour and a half. Game was stuttery in the main menu and veins of evil as normal. It also seems to be putting a weird strain on the GPU as when it's running 100+ fps the fans are silent, but when it's 24fps the rans are going full tilt.

Hi Tute,

That is truly peculiar and I'm sorry to hear you're having issues with the framerate with certain UI elements. If I had to take a guess it'd be a result of the Coherent GT Middleware which renders the UI (as a webpage) interacting in a strange way with your setup/drivers. We've not had any similar reports and currently we don't have access to our AMD testing machine (It's still in the office, we're all out of due to the pandemic) so I can't verify whether it's an issue with the latest drivers.

I'll throw it into our backlog for our team to investigate once we swing back around to WFTO for a maintenance pass in the meantime if you could chuck the output log for your affected session across that'd be great.

Cheers,

Lee
